A Land Use Permit is required for most building projects in Hartland Township. The purpose of the Permit is to ensure that any new construction, addition, or alteration comply with the standards of the Township’s Zoning Ordinance. Once a Land Use Permit has been approved by Hartland Township, an applicant proceeds to the Livingston County Building Department to apply for a Building Permit. The County Building Department will not accept an application for a Building Permit without a Land Use Permit from the Township.
The Township also issues Land Use Waivers for those projects that require a Building Permit from the County but do not have implications on zoning. This includes projects such as interior renovations, new windows and doors, and new roofing or siding. The Planning Department’s goal is to complete a review of a Land Use Permit application in less than two business days.
Those interested in any new building project are encouraged to contact the Planning Department with any questions on standards and procedures, or to review the Township’s Development Guidebooks which were created to help guide applicants through the review process.
Permit applications can be found here.
Hartland Township requires a Special Event Permit for any event intended to generate public attendance, participation or spectators. This is to ensure that traffic, parking and crowd control is properly managed in order to protect the health and safety of township residents. The first step in acquiring a Special Event Permit is to complete the Special Event Permit application, and to include the information listed in the Special Event Permit checklist. Since each Special Event is unique, feel free to contact the Planning Department for more information.
Before beginning a signage project, please contact the Planning Department for a complimentary consultation. These consultations will provide you with additional information and counsel to ensure that the review procedes as seamlessly as possible. To schedule an appointment, please contact the Planning Department at (810) 632-7498.
You may also access the guidebooks below, which review the sign approval process. The sign permit application can be found here.
Hartland Township has created easy-to-understand guides for our businesses and residents. These guides provide a roadmap for application processes ranging from land use and site plans to signs and special events.
The Planning Department staff is available to answer any questions you may have and to walk you through the application process. Feel free to contact the Planning Department at (810) 632-7498 or stop by Township Hall.
