Planning and Zoning

The Planning Department is primarily responsible for administering the laws, regulations, and requirements that pertain to the physical development of the Township. Working with the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals, this department publishes and enforces ordinances designed to maintain the character of the Hartland Community.

The Planning Department provides complementary consultations with residents, builders, contractors, and businesses to ensure that development activities are in compliance with Township ordinances.  The Planning Department is also charged with ensuring that all development meets the standards set forth in Township ordinances and, if one does not, that corrective measures are put in place. You can visit the Planning Department's offices between 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday to meet with staff regarding your project.

The Comprehensive Plan for the Township as well as a Conceptual Plan for Village are the foundation for much of what we do.  While these documents are updated and revisited as needed, they provide a roadmap for development within the Township.

In a recent resident survey, respondents overwhelmingly supported the Township’s planning and zoning regulations.  Residents trust that the Township will maintain the character of this community – this is a trust that we value, respect, and will uphold.
